A 52-year-old male started to take rifampicin, 450§· twice weekly, with isoniazid, 400
§· per day, for the treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis. Half an hour after the 3rd dose,
abrupt onset of fever, acute GI upset and cyanosis developed. During the following 11
days, the patient was oliguric.
Administration of rifampicin, 450§· daily, with other antituberculsis drugs 5years
previously, was not eventful.
A renal biopsy repealed an interstitial nephritis.
The patient received prednisolone, 30§· per day, and three hemodialyses and recovered
from an acute renal failure.
We feel that rifampicin induceda hypersensitivity reaction.
In view of its frequent use, the side effect of rifampicin has been reviewed.
